Winter's Song

winter white is all around you,
floating gently from the sky.
feathery flakes fall from Heaven
bringing a tear to your eye.

the magic of Winter now surrounds you—
its majesty touches your heart.
jack frost’s work creates a breathtaking view
that your soul wishes would never part.

winter’s wonders rule the heart,
refreshing your body and soul.
they take you to a place you’ve always loved—
a place where happiness was your only goal.

you run outside just like a child,
feeling like you’ve never felt before.
frolicking and playing in the snow drifts,
your mind opens up the past’s door.

you remember the feeling as a child,
when Winter graced the Earth with its touch.
you wonder how you ever could forget that time
and the feelings that you miss so much.

winter’s wonders rule the heart,
refreshing your body and soul.
they take you to a place you’ve always loved—
a place where happiness was your only goal.

Winter's Quiet

silent snowflakes fall from
a darkening sky.
heavy footsteps fall on
new fallen powder,
making only a light crunch.
the winter animals,
not yet awakened by
the moon’s first silvery rays,
are quietly dreaming
in their dens.
a winter’s twilight seems
deathly quiet,
but vibrantly alive
at the same time.

Winter Finally Arrives

the sun raises its head—
sleepy and low—
barely kissing the Earth
with its brilliant radiance.
the sky is clear—
magnificently blue and endless.
you walk outside,
relishing that first breath
of cold, clear air—
air so crisp you can feel
its icy fingers branch out and
reach for your lungs.
heat escapes from the door,
its shadow twisting and moving
in an eerie seasonal waltz.
yes, winter has finally come.
jack frost has painted his masterpiece,
a winter wonderland pristine
in its innocence and beauty.

Winter (a haiku)

the quiet of dawn.
sledding down a snowy hill.
the biting cold air.

Summer Vacation

they pulled out early that morning,
her parents arguing about
which route was fastest
and her little brother making
faces at the back of her head.
she didn’t care.
the summers at the lake were
her favourite times of the year.
the skies were the same colour
as an old, faded pair of jeans.
the clouds, fluffy and white,
reminded her of the cotton candy
her daddy always bought at the fair.
the flowers seemed more vibrant,
and the trees danced their slow waltz
in the fresh, salt-tangy breeze.
she loved these summers because
they spent them as a family.
she also loved them because she could
explore manson’s abandoned mine shaft.

Summer

humid blazing heat.
lazy pool side afternoons.
shady hideaways.

Spring Awakening

raindrops fall from heaven above,
washing the earth in their glorious life.
the tiny seeds of autumn reach
for the miraculous liquid
and begin to grow.
towards the surface they stretch,
twisting and turning
to reach the warm light.
suddenly, a tender green shoot
breaks through thebdlack, fragrant soil,
signaling the beginning of
earth’s renewal.

Spring

the dawn of new life.
colors awaken from sleep.
renewed majesty.

December Snowfall

perfect falling stars.
blankets of powdery white.
wondrous renewal.

Seasons Change (an extended haiku)

the dawn of new life.
colors awaken from their sleep.
renewing earth’s majesty.

dark ominous clouds.
magnificent liquid life.
brand new life refreshed.

humid blazing heat.
lazy pool side afternoons.
shady hideaways.

rumbling thunder heads.
lightning ripping through the dark.
relief from the heat.

brittle, dying leaves.
cool winds caress rosy cheeks.
bleakness devours life.

leaves crackle and snap.
wind moans through empty gutters.
birds squawk their goodbye.

the quiet of dawn.
sledding down a snowy hill.
the biting cold air.

perfect falling stars.
blankets of powdery white.
wondrous renewal.

October Symphony

leaves crackle and snap.
wind moans through empty gutters.
birds squawk their goodbye.

July Storm (a haiku)

rumbling thunder heads.
lightning ripping through the dark.
relief from the heat.

Autumn's Kiss

the leaves danced in
the inner courtyard,
floating on the air as
light as feathers.
the wooden door to
the pantry,
the jamb swollen
from humidity,
banged against the frame.
she shivered and
pulled her sweater closer
as the chilly imprint of
autumn’s first kiss
caressed her neck.

Autumn

brittle, dying leaves.
cool winds caress rosy cheeks.
bleakness devours life.

April Showers (a haiku)

dark ominous clouds.
magnificent liquid life.
brand new life refreshed.

An August Storm

sundown.
the sun was slipping
below the horizon,
orange and red—
looking like a
balloon being squashed
until it would pop
like an over-full mosquito.
in the East,
it had already gone dark
but no moon or starts were
visible—
they had been hidden by
low, ominous clouds.
thunder rumbled its warning
in the distance as if to say,
“i’m coming for you.”

Joey

joey michaels was just eighteen,
and he’d had a rough life.
usually an upstanding kid,
divorce had caused him much strife.

his mom and dad had split,
forcing Joey to choose.
either way, he figured,
i’m the one who’s going to lose.

the pain was too much,
and he needed it to go away.
so marijuana and cocaine
became his words of the day.

out of his mind
on a phenomenal high,
joey stumbled into the room
determined to die.

he rummaged through the box,
looking for a pill—
hoping when he took it,
he wouldn’t get ill.

he took the meds
and lay down on the floor,
his dilated eyes
fixed on the door.

his pulse slowed and
his heart skipped a beat.
the silence was disturbed
by approaching feet.

his mother saw him,
only moments too late.
joey saw the bright light
and rushed to meet his fate.

his funeral was somber,
held in the pouring rain.
his parents continually wept,
consumed by their pain.

just eighteen—so very young.
if only his parents could have tried
to put aside their differences
before their son had died.

joey michaels’ battle is lost,
and now he is gone.
he is out of the war
where he’d been used as a pawn.

his parents still grieve,
but Joey’s pain is at an end.
so heed this warning
and take care my friend.

if your life is spiraling out of control,
and you feel like you can’t take anymore.
don’t turn to drugs—you’ll only
close your future’s door.

Jason

i looked down at
the red little face
and lost my heart.

that perfect nose,
those tiny hands—
i knew we’d never part.

those eyes so blue—
so wonderfully bright—
they burned into my heart,
and i finally saw the light.

i held him close,
adoring his heat,
and it didn’t take long.

the darkness in my life was
finally gone and
i knew where I belong.

those eyes so blue—
so wonderfully bright—
they burned into my heart,
and I finally saw the light.

Adolf Hitler

a small man possessing a genius mind,
he holds out his hand in greeting
to a people with dying hope.
just a corporal when he suffered
crippling humiliation and
debilitating gassing at
the hands of his mortal enemies,
he now leads the country in
a war of revenge,
vowing to make those who oppose him
pay with their lives.

Old Glory

pure white stripes represent
the innocence of a nation
and a hope for the future.

fiery red stripes represent
the blood of brothers lost
and a love for a country.

a midnight field is adorned with
fifty glimmering stars,
a shimmering reminder of each proud state.

its simple, yet powerful, design
has the power to bring a tear to your eye
and to bring a country to the brink of war.

Broken Promises (an extended haiku)

crystalline sugar
melted dreams fall all around
full moonlight screams pain

diamond does glitter
broken promises shining
full moonlight screams pain

saccharine sweetness
unrequited love dances
full moonlight screams pain

liquid grief frozen
forever memorial of truth
full moonlight screams pain

cocaine rock bottom
welcome to queendom of lies
full moonlight screams pain

Chocolate

chocolate.
dark.
smooth.
sweet.
inviting.
with childish anticipation,
you tear open the wrapper and
take your first heavenly bite.
the sweet melody washes over
your tongue and throat,
and you feel as though
you’ve taken your first communion and
have been blessed.
when it’s gone,
you relish the aftertaste
as if it were some sinful moment
from behind the high school
to reflect upon in quiet times.
flavourful.
erotic.
tempting.
tantalising.
chocolate.
